What Is the Best Free Video Converter for High Quality Output Without Losing Resolution?

Offline
Hello everyone.

I have been trying to convert my video files from MKV to MP4 format for the past few days, but every tool I use either reduces the quality significantly or takes forever to process even short clips.

I have tried a few free options online but most of them add watermarks or limit file size.

I need something that supports batch conversion, handles large files efficiently, and preserves the original resolution and audio quality.

I am using Windows 11. Can anyone recommend a reliable free or affordable video converter that actually works well without these frustrating limitations?

Since MKV and MP4 are just "containers" holding the actual video and audio data, you usually don't need to re-encode the video at all if it's already in a standard format like H.264 or HEVC. Instead, you can do what is called remuxing (or "stream copying"). This simply changes the outer container from MKV to MP4 without touching the underlying video, meaning zero quality loss and processing that finishes in seconds, even for massive files.

Here are the best free, watermark-free tools for Windows 11 that handle batch remuxing and high-quality converting perfectly:

1. Shutter Encoder (Highly Recommended)

This is an incredible, completely free open-source tool designed by video editors. It is perfect for both instant container swapping and heavy-duty re-encoding.

  • How to do it instantly (No quality loss):
    1. Drag and drop your batch of MKV files into the list.
    2. Under "Choose function", select Rewrap.
    3. Set the extension to .mp4.
    4. Click Start function. It will convert large files almost instantly because it is just copying the streams.
  • If you need to compress: You can choose H.264 or H.265, which will re-encode the files using your hardware acceleration (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel) for maximum speed.

2. XMedia Recode

Another excellent, lightweight free Windows tool specifically built for batch processing and stream copying.

  • How to use it:
    1. Open the program and add your files.
    2. Set the Profile/Format to MP4.
    3. Go to the Video tab and change the "Mode" from Convert to Copy. Do the same in the Audio tab.
    4. Click Add to queue and then Encode.
  • Why it fits: Like Shutter Encoder, setting it to "Copy" means the process takes mere seconds per file with absolutely zero quality degradation.

3. HandBrake

If your MKV files contain an older or incompatible video codec that must be re-encoded to play properly as an MP4, HandBrake is the undisputed open-source king.

  • Pros: Outstanding batch queuing system, handles massive files flawlessly, and has excellent presets (like "Production Standard" or "Creator" presets).
  • Cons: HandBrake always re-encodes video. It does not support a "Copy/Rewrap" mode, so it will utilize your CPU/GPU and take some time to process, though you can minimize quality loss by adjusting the Constant Quality (RF) slider (setting it between 18 and 22 yields near-lossless results).

💡 Summary Recommendation

Start with Shutter Encoder and use the Rewrap function. It will process your batch of files at the speed of your hard drive, keeping 100% of your original video and audio resolution completely intact without any watermarks or limits.

Honestly. Just get Tdarr and run it in your server with your video files. You can set it up to run at only certain hours. I have mine running at night while I sleep. It will re encode your entire library. Works like a charm.
