How do I find the data of which music file is playing?

I use kodi mainly as a jukebox for music, and as I am a bit of a tinkerer I am planning on doing the following:

I have a string of nanopixel colourshifting leds (ws2812 type things), that I can control through a USB interface from my (linux) computer. I want to be able to tell them to change colour along with the genre of the music that kodi is playing. So not a VU meter style thing, just a "metal is playing - leds turn blue" "classical is playing - leds turn magenta" type of thing. I want to read the genre from the MP3 metadata file, but for that I need to know where to read the filename (or the metadata directly) of the currently playing file. Once I have that, it's a simple script. Considering Kodi already displays the song title on screen, this shouldn't be too difficult, but I haven't been able to figure out where to find the info. Is there someone here who can enlighten me on this? Many thanks in advance for your replies and your time.
